March 15, 2011 TRIBUTE
My beautiful niece Debbie Basler passed away tonight. She was 40 and leaves a sweet husband and two wonderful teenage children – a daughter 18 and a son 15. Debbie was diagnosed with breast cancer about a year ago and had a double mastectomy as a precaution, followed by reconstructive surgery. She was told that her lymph glands were clear and that she did not need chemo. About 5 weeks ago she suddenly started having vision problems, went to the eye doctor, and was given glasses which seemed to correct the problem. Her last follow-up reconstruction appointment was 3 1/2 weeks ago. A few days after that she went to the emergency room thinking that she was having a gall bladder attack. Unfortunately it turned out to be very advanced stage 4 breast cancer. She was sent home and was told to come back in a few days for radiation treatments, but that turned out to be optimistic. She was moved to Northwestern Hospital in Chicago where she underwent many procedures and surgeries in the last 2 weeks, received about 50 units of blood/plasma/platelets and was on life support for about 10 days. The doctors were heroic but all efforts failed. It was just too late. She will be missed.
